Caffeine addict

You know, if I could separate food and fashion, there is a 40 per cent chance that I would not only be able to fit into my clothes better, but that my clothes might be cleaner - it's actually scientifically proven that white cotton and red wine/Coke/orange juice/anything with staining potential are attracted to each other (Plausible? Yes. True? If you think that gullible isn't in the dictionary.)

But coffee - coffee is a different story, my friends. It cannot be separated. How else do you think everyone manages to stay so skinny and AWAKE in the industry? It's not those "eight" glasses of water a day - and they don't sell V overseas.

What's more, no coffee = a massive chunk of the colour wheel gone MIA. Espresso, mocha and latte with a dash of caramel and cream - colours that would exist, but not in the same way we look at them thanks to coffee. So enjoy this spread that's filled with all these lovely rich colours. And get a coffee (although I highly suggest waiting till tomorrow morning - coffee now is like arriving at the toll booth with fifty cents in your wallet. NOT GOOD.).

P.s. More work exp stuff soon!

Mostly farewell

So it's been 3 weeks since I last blogged, and NO I haven't been overseas... that was my wishful thinking.
No, what's really happened is that my friends and I have started the Small Print: the news without the crappy bits. So basically, politics and fashion - no sport, business, cars or property. (Actually, not that spohttp://www.blogger.com/img/gl.link.gifrt is bad, but that none of us are particularly into it so until we get a new contributor...)
I'm in charge of fashion/beauty/arts/lifestyle and everything in between (apparently), so all my posts will be going up there now, because unfortunately I don't have time for two blogs.
But please check our site out - the spreads are bigger, better and 100000000000x hotter!! Oh, and leave comments! Comments make us happy. And happiness is good.

Fashion Week Q & A

Yeah, alright, as if you haven't heard enough of Fashion Week. I love it too guys, I'd just rather you save on all the time and effort it takes to report back to me and just SEND ME THERE.

Much easier, no?

But of course the easiest solution is always ignored. >sigh< Maybe next time. Until then, the next best thing: a fun Q & A spread with some of the designers. Click to enlarge.

xx and enjoy the long weekend!

p.s. All images and text courtesy of Vogue Australia. For more talking with designers, clink on the link here.

Hot to trot

When someone says "knit", I always have this image of a cute li'l granny knitting while swinging back and forth in her rocking chair on her front porch. And for some reason, the end product is always a baby blanket. Which means I previously couldn't give a stuff about knitting because, quite simply, baby blankets have nothing to do with me.

But then I realised - hey wait! Knits can mean clothes! Knits can mean warm and non-frumpy! And non-50 +! (Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's fine if you are over fifty, but I'm not. Not age appropriate, you see?)

So here are my favourite knit dresses. Big, chunky cardies are in too - but first we need some clothes underneath.

xx

Blog Watch!!

This week:

Stuff that I Bought that You Should Buy Too discovers the truth behind Playboy makeup and also imagines Hugh Hefner in a bunny suit (Argh, the image! Old men, no matter how healthy or wealthy they are, should stay out of anything even remotely revealing)...

Fashion is Spinach gives us details on what sounds like an insanely awesome vintage shopping spree (and makes me envious that it's spring in NY, and dreary ol' autumn here)...

The Daily Cookie gives a helpful tute on how to apply false eyelashes...

and Girl With a Satchel looks at body and health issues in the girly media lately.

xx

P.S. Check out this photo of Carla Bruni-Sarkozy. She looks hot, yes? Hell, no wonder he married her. Or maybe it's just the dress...

Primp it!

Zoe Foster, she of the highly amusing Fruity Beauty blog and also Harper's Bazaar, has announced that she will be editor-in-chief of new beauty website primped.com.au.

The "go-to for the how-to in beauty" will be launched in July.

With other supremely awesome people such as Nick Waterman, Marguerite Kramer (former ACP online editorial director*) and Yasemin Turker (formerly of Famous), Zoe says that it's going to be a "a web portal (blogs, news, reviews, tips, tricks, interviews, videos, all manner of online magnificence) dedicated entirely to beauty in all of its glorious forms" and "more fun than pretty much anything you can think of that is really, really fun".

More fun than ice cream or laser tag or laughing at the people stuck in traffic on the other side of the road when your side is cruising just fine? (Yes, some people might call that last one "cruel".)

If Fruity Beauty is anything to go by, it will be. I've only seen the homepage and I'm already hearting it. Damn those pretty colours.

xx

*A quick Google search reveals that Marguerite Kramer was the awesome person behind Harpersbazaar.com.au, Madison.com.au, Shoptilyoudrop.com.au, 30daysoffashionandbeauty.com.au. Geez, woman, stop over-acheiving already.

Road to luxury

Hallelujah!

News flash: Silk, once the domain of the rich*, is now affordable. Read it and weep (for joy) - AFFORDABLE.

Which means that silk is no longer just for rich people who drive really fancy cars and who get paranoid that these really fancy cars will get scratched by a sullen teenager who wishes the fancy car was theirs.

No, silk is for me. And you. In the manner of Colette Dinnigan silk lingerie under $50 and Forever New silk blouses under $100.

But that doesn't mean I won't feel rich. You just wait - one day that Audi convertible will be mine.

xx

P.s. See more gorgeous silkiness at I am Fashion as they lust after Lanvin. Me too, sisters, me too.

*Okay, so at least 500 years ago. But it's still got the luxury tag stuck to it.

Stock up on stockings

I am loving, LOVING opaques at the moment. Unfortunately, they're a bit dressy to wear in my situation, and the whole flower-hippy-dress-so-obviously-from-Vinnie's-but-you'll-say-it's-from-Glebe-Markets + tights combo really isn't my thing

>takes a deep breath<

Anyway. In a nutshell: Levante and Leona Edmiston are my opaque stocking lovers, but I hear Country Road and Witchery do nice, affordable, good quality versions too. Country Road is also on sale at the moment >cackles with glee<.

Okay, my tight-arse blood is showing itself now.

Happy April Fools!

No prank here, but I thought I'd say it anyway. Hey, least it's better than "A pinch and a punch for the first of the month, no-returns-full-stop-ow! You can't do that, I said NO RETURNS, FULL STOP! Skank."

Also, because I've been horribly neglectful and busy-ful, I shall post two spreads, both which completely contradict each other. The first, "Bow to a Classic", celebrates my love for all things classy, elegant and lady-like with no less than thirteen items featuring, funnily enough, a bow.

The second, "Museum of Modern Belts", was inspired both by the statement belt and the fact that the hilarious acronym of Museum of Modern Art "MoMA" was stuck in my head and this seemed the only way I could get it out. Well, it worked. MoMB is nowhere near as catchy. But, thank goodness, is still just as sexy.

xx my lovers!

Noir empire

Huh. Two hours ago, it was boiling and I cursed myself for wearing jeans. Now, however, it's pouring bucketloads and I've changed into shorts. If the weather were a person I would be cheerfully screaming at it and bashing its head in as if it were a person who has woken me up at 6 am on one of my extremely rare sleep-in days, or worse still, "forgotten" to tell me I didn't need to turn up for work.

But enough of this bleak, black stuff. Bleak should be contained to British weather and black should be contained to textual genres named after its French cousin. Yes, I'm talking about YOU, noir.

Regardez, mes amis. Et maintenant, je dois voir le Gossip Girl!

XOXO
You know you love me (and my horrible French).

Chocolate manna from Heaven

Look, I know manna was something along the lines of honey and bread or something. And I'm not saying it should have been chocolate, or cinnamon buns, or anything else for that matter. But that doesn't mean I can't imagine beautifully foiled Lindt or Godiva chocolate eggs dropping from the sky and right into my mouth. No, indeed.

Blog Watch: While you were sleeping...

Well, I wasn’t sleeping. Instead I was trawling the web because I’m a web-aholic and was staying up when I should have been sleeping.

But. While I was being strangely addicted to the net (okay, okay, it was the shopping sites that got me. Those things should be banned from people with credit cards and a shpping addiction. But then they wouldn’t make money, so it’d be a lose-lose situation… you know what? I think I’ll shut up now.) I found the following out from sources other than Wikipedia:

1. Kate Moss is shorter than Miranda Kerr. I do not know why I didn’t know that – perhaps because I’m short, and therefore don’t distinguish between people taller than me since I can’t really see up there anyway?

2. Fug madness is possibly one of the most fulfilling yes strangely unproductive ways to fill in time…

3. Playing online tag is a nice, fun and friendly way of stalking…

4. My nail polish collection is nowhere near completion…

5. The Daily Telegraph’s Sydney Confidential spends an awful lot of time online too (and desperately trying to pretend it’s work-related)

Thank goodness for YSL’s Touche Eclat.

xx and have a good Easter break!

Break in those dancin' shoes

I've got a slightly weird way of breaking in my shoes. See, what I do is put on my brand spanking-new shoes, make sure my door is shut, pump up the music and dance. Hip hop, house, whatever I feel like.
Right now though, I'm ADORING Fred Astaire. If you're blue, and you don't know what to do, [insert Fred Astaire-like words), puttin' on the ritz... dum, dum, dum... >glances around surreptitiously<

And yes, each time, I hope no one's caught me.

Alice McCall for Topshop

J'ADORE Alice McCall. Who doesn't? Her designs are cute, punky, original and chock-full of attitude. Okay, so she dropped a little in my yummy-meter with Gracie, her diffusion line for General Pants, because the line was just so cute and mainstream I thought Hello Kitty was a dose of savoury in Gracie's sugary little world.

But. She has TOTALLY redeemed herself with a new diffusion line, this time for the totally rockin' Topshop in the UK. If this were the worm used during the Rudd/Howard debate in last year's federal election, it would be skyrocketing right now.

Enjoy. Click to enlarge, as usual.

Smokin'

Look, there's no doubt about it: YSL's Le Smoking is the sex. If it were a person, I would rape it.

It'd have to be classy rape of course, so you know, I'd take it to a classy bar and spike its fancy cocktail, then carry it back to some swishy 5-star hotel and rape it on those awesomely soft and big beds hotels have.*

But it's not a person, and so I shall have to console myself by putting together a spread of my fav. classic-yet-unique-and-sexy items in stores now. >licks lips<

*Note: this is PURELY HYPOTHETICAL. I do not condone rape in any fashion, I am just saying that Le Smoking is sexy.

There are so many puns you can make with Target

Indeed, there are. But I will refrain, and concentrate on the thing that's really got me excited - Target's new Limited Edition range.

Now I know many of you will be turning your noses skywards because it's Target - like gosh, my old and daggy mother shops there! (She knows I love her) I know, because I used to do it too and so did my boyfriend. But now I'm all like, "Let's go shopping at Target! You can pay!" to him. He's not quite as enthusiastic as me, and I have NO IDEA why. Target clothes are hot, and they keep on getting better.

Wearable? Tick. Quality? Tick. Gorgeous designs and colours? Tick. Looks like I paid more than I really did? Tick. Buy? Ticktickticktickticktick.

LLMF 08

Okay, so it has totally NOT been my fault I haven't been blogging... yes, uni, I blame YOU! >points finger in manner of US recruitment ad<
Anyway, so while you were sleeping (or not)...

Dotti literally popped up at L'Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival with preppy chic and Lady-of-the-manor-style elegance, complete with leather gloves and 20's style hats...(click to enlarge)

... and demonstrated a side perk of being a model - you get to stand on stage and rock out without actually having to play. Like Guitar Hero, but fifty times better.

Best outfit awards go to Martin Grant for his awesome take on metallics

and Shakuhachi for this gorgeous, awesome, sexy and somehow wearable but still unique and fashionable mama:

Awards for outfit-so-ugly-you-should-pay-ME-to-wear-it go to:
TV - what the HELL were they thinking??

and FrisonFinetti. Star Trek and communism are OVER, people!!

Best ranges:
Bettina Liano for sexy punk (I love the clothes so much I would totally marry them, except I think that's illegal)

and Gwendolynne (1) and Aurelio Costarella (2) for a refreshing dose of ethereal romance.

And last, but not least, Most Blatant Advertising Yet Still Fugly Award goes to >drumroll<...
Parade End! For their *subtle* use of Harper's Bazaar magazines.

Warm me up

Imagine this: You’re wearing summer clothes, because, well, it’s the middle of summer. But suddenly, it’s overcast. A drop falls on your face, and then another one, and another, and more now, each getting colder and colder. You’re wet and the wind decides to blow, leaving you icy and freezing under your flimsy summer clothes. And all you want… is a coat.

So check out these babies by clicking on the image to expand. Or, you could just get a hot chocolate.

La Scarf Dolce

On reviewing their Autumn/Winter Collection 08/09, Signors Dolce and Gabbana might have had a conversation like this:

"Domenico! This is boring, what I see. The man pants are not enough for these women. It is not flamboyant, captivating enough. The models are bored already. What can we do to brighten their day?"
"Stefano, mio amico, what we need is SCARVES! Bright, multicoloured SCARVES. Brilliant, si?"

Siiiii, you say. Because scarves are not only GORGEOUS, they are COLOURFUL and bring interest to the dreary winter colour palette of gloomy neutrals, and best of all, they're PRACTICAL!! You never thought fashion could be this smart, eh?

Oscar is a Sesame Street character

I think people would be much happier if they were given a Sesame Street character rather than a little golden man. I mean, Sesame Street = childhood = happiness (generally speaking), whereas little gold man = award for creating an alternate personality. Hmm. And they wonder why so many actors need psychiatrists?

Anyway, not that I have anything against acting. I do, however, have something against how boring the gowns were this year. There are only so many red, strapless/off-the-shoulder gowns one can take before it looks like a sea of red, where the actresses have all gotten into a cat fight and clawed the blood out of each other. Or taken snippets off the red carpet and stuck it onto themselves. RARRH.

Standouts (of the gowns, that is - who can be stuffed watching the entire ceremony when the results are up on the net anyway??) included:

The woman who is cool, awesome and ethereal without being a loony bat with her head in another world, Cate Blanchett. Five stars for wearing an awesome shade of midnight blue that contrasts strikingly with her skin, and for wearing a necklace that looks like she picked it up at the markets on her many exotic travels.

Marion Cotillard. I have always loved her, from the moment I saw her in Big Fish while "studying" the text for my HSC, not admiring the supreme French awesomeness of the antagonist's wife. And now - okay, so the dress has fish scales all over it, but it fits her well and she looks good without being too safe.

Nicole Kidman. For her gorgeous necklace that saves the boring black gown.

And finally, Anne Hathaway. Not for the gorgeous gown, or matching red lipstick, and not even because she's so damn pale she should be the spokesperson for the Cancer Council. The woman looks like she's forgotten what the sun looks like. Get some vitamin D, PLEASE, Anne!
No, she makes it on the list for being chatty and amiable and down-to-earth in the pre-Oscars media chat-up. A good personality can save everything, even ghosts. Thanks, Caspar!

Runway make up 2

Click to enlarge, and check out this gorgeous look that I LOVE - watered down, of course. Use the pigments with a thin eyeshadow brush and line your eyes, keeping it thin on the bottom lash line and blending the edges so the colour's not as sharp.
And please, while you may not look like the two in the bottom-right-hand pic if you do your cheeks/lips a little, DON'T USE ANY MORE THAN YOU HAVE TO. Trust me. I have. And I've also gotten looks from people wondering why I was so far from the red-light district. Embarrassing, to say the least.

Runway make up

Someone once said/wrote/blogged that the best thing about Australia is that we can wear seasonal trends from overseas now. Good. Because the makeup looks from New York Fashion Week Fall were hotter-than-Justin-Timberlake and I want to wear them NOW. Here's the first one from Oscar de la Renta. Click to enlarge.

Why I love Gossip Girl

Actually it's not hard to love Gossip Girl. E.g. despite discrepancies such as in last night's episode 'Hi, Society'...:
* Nate is so stressed he dances out of time at the debutante ball - real gentlemen don't do that.

* When Jenny tells Allison essentially that she hates the shoes Allison bought her because "the kids at school shop at Saks and Bendel's. I can't wear somebody else's old shoes!" doesn't she know that vintage is even better??

(okay and so this list is in no way a complete and accurate list of dodgy things the directors thought they could get away with while we were hypnotised by how rich and fabulous the characters are, because they were right, damn them!)

...the show still had its moments:

* When Blair and Nate make out while Chuck spots them, before they go into the bedroom? Totally juvenile, the way Nate raises his eyebrows. BOYS!

* Dan carrying Serena out at the end of the ball is the CUTEST THING ON TV EVER!!!!

>sigh<
xoxo
Totally Obsessed with Gossip Girl

Magazines are shiny...

And I like shiny things. Which is probably why I don't have the same interest in newspapers (besides the fact that broadsheets are so large they're impossible to read without elbowing both passengers on either side of u on the train and having to apologise profusely before you return to your newspaper and do the same thing again).

At the moment: just finished reading the March issue of Vanity Fair.
Verdict: Definitely shiny. Awesome fold-out cover with a glamorous spread of "the 10 Fresh Faces of 2008" in John Galliano, the Ultimate Guide to the Oscars, "Ceremony or no ceremony" featuring cute boardgame 'High on Hollywood', photographs by Mario Testino and the 2008 Holly Portfolio 'Hitchcock Classics', with Keira Knightley, Charlize Theron, ScarJo, Javier Bardem and more.

Glamour and copious amounts of reading material for the plane to boot. Features include 'Jerry Weintraub Presents!', 'The Right Fluff: A Guy's Guide to Chick Flicks', and 'Mailer's Movie Madness'.

Buy it or not: Hey, if even little Miss Tight-Ass here would buy it, it's gotta be worth it, aye?

QUOTE OF THE DAY:
One half of the duo Hamish and Andy said today that he doesn't like leggings worn as pants "because it's confusing - the top half is all casual, and the bottom half is Flashdance." Indeed.
